![]() More rough work. This shows where lower quarter halfs had been welded in. It's hard to see, but rather than smoothing all of the welds, they had knocked in the quarter panel along the seam, then filled it in with Bondo. This is referred to as the 'cave-and-pave' technique. ![]() More ugly welds were found along the rear of the quarters. ![]() And more, along the inside of the quarter at the trunk weatherstrip gutter seam. ![]() This will take some work. It's still surprising to us what restorers will do instead of proper repairs. Don't worry, it's nothing that some sheet metal, a hammer and dolly, and MIG welder can't fix. Having the quarter panel off will make the repair easier. ![]() And still more. This is the front of the driver's door shell. This was filled in with body filler to hide the rust. We will have to source another door shell as this one is beyond reasonable repair. ![]() Here we've completely removed the quarter panel by drilling out all of the spot welds. The inside of the body structure will have to be sanded and undercoated to keep rust from forming again. ![]() The driver's side door and quarter panel removed. Note the large X-Brace welded into the body structure to prevent movement while the quarter panels are off. This is critical to panel alignment. ![]() The passenger door skin also needed replacement. We'll handle this task. ![]() Fast forward- the door skin is on, and quarters are tacked into place. We spared no expense with this. We sourced full Goodmark convertible quarter panels. These have been discontinued and are EXTREMELY expensive, but these had to be done to make the car right again. Also note the new rocker panels. Both sides had rust holes and required replacement.
