Small piles of metal are left over each day. (We are all caught up on Tetanus vaccines!) This quarter panel replacement will also require some extensive fabrication. We'll start by replacing the rotted portions of the wheelwell. This supports the quarter panel and needs to be sturdy. The rusted portion of the front of the wheelwell is cut out and prepared for a patch. The quarter skin is trimmed and installation begins, a small section at a time. We weld it very slowly to avoid heat distortion. The bulk of the quarter now welded in place, attention turns to the end cap. This side is in very poor condition due to both the collision and the rust. One piece at a time, we'll make it. Skip ahead, here is the finished product. Note that the bumper and deck lid are back in place. We want our gaps even and tight. Epoxy primer is sprayed and the panel is protected. This shows the inside of the end cap. This will be cleaned up and painted with splatter paint. Now that the quarters are on, body work begins. |
