| 1970 Camaro-"The Light" This is going to be a highly modified Pro-Touring 1970 Camaro RS/SS. The car arrives at HCC having already been treated to a full frame from Martz Chassis. The front suspension is Mustang II style with coilover shocks, tubular control arms, rack and pinion steering and big ass brakes from Wilwood! The owner desires a vehicle that has many unique appearance modifications as well as the less obvious performance modifications. For appearance: The marker lights (front and rear) are filled in The SS trim is deleted The body seam on the RS nose panel is deleted The door handles will be replaced with late model Corvette units The rear spoiler will be modified with a center extension The firewall will be smoothed The fuel filler will be moved to the left quarter The exhaust will be routed through the center of the rear valance Some hood vents will be deleted to better match the stripe package The final color of the car will be gray with silver stripes--no, wait--blue with white stripes--no, wait again--metallic red with silver stripes. We're going to have to hurry up and paint it before the color changes again! The powertrain will consist of a LS series all aluminum engine, HCC performance built 4L60E transmission and a Ford 9". The rear suspension is a 4 link unit installed by Martz Chassis. The engine bay will be smooth and uncluttered as with all of HCC's engine installs. Follow along as we construct "The Light!" |
The car came to us in pieces. We started by filling in the marker lights and emblem holes. We then reassembled the front clip to test fit on the new frame. The right fender was rusted and required replacement. The inner fenders are also replaced. We also built custom LS engine mounting plates that locate the LS exactly where we want it. The exhaust cutout is marked on the valance. The fuel filler is filled in. A template for the exhaust cutout is built on the bench and transferred to the valance one piece at a time. Note that the outer piece is cut out and welded in while the inner piece is still in place. This leaves the piece structurally sound during the modification.
