1970 LS2 Chevelle Convertible—Available

This car was purchased painted. It was painted by a 'reputable' automotive restoration shop and was laid out in PPG silver with gray stripes. When pushing the car around the shop as an empty shell on the frame, we started to develop cracks often seen after cut-rate body and paint work. The decision was made to start anew. We started by media blasting the car. A normally rough project consumes 600-800 pounds of blasting media. This car took 2300 pounds of media to remove the gallons of filler used to 'carve' the shell into the shape of a 70 Chevelle. Read on to see what we found under the Bondo and how we fixed it.

This car will feature an LS2 engine, 4L60E transmission, pro-touring suspension, giant Baer Brakes, 2003 Cadillac Escalade gauge cluster in a hand-built dash, power windows, good stereo, air conditioning, and too many other options to list. It will also perform modern conveniences found in a new Escalade, such as: automatic headlamps, theater-style courtesy light dimming, cruise control, remote keyless entry, automatic locks, retained accessory power (power windows and radio continue to work after key is off until door is opened), express down power windows, sport shift mode, and much more!

We start with the car on the trailer after the blasting process. It's cold, and we have to remove all of the media left in the car and get it into etching primer before we call it a day to keep rust from forming.

This is the lower cowl structure. Notice the multiple rust holes. Also, the pinch seam is completely rusted through. This will all have to be replaced.

Rust holes in the top of the cowl. Nice, Huh? Keep watching, there's more.

This is the back side of the water drain gutter that makes up the top of the cowl, as seen from the passenger seat area. That spotting around the wiring harness retainer is just as it looks, rust holes. We're pretty sure this car would have leaked like a sieve during a car wash.

We fabricated up a repair patch for the rusted out section of the rain gutter and welded it in place. A similar piece had to be created for the driver's side of the gutter as it was in similar shape.

As there are no cowl patch panels available as of yet, we also had to create pieces to repair the cowl bottom structure. A little more grinding, then this one will be a done deal. We'll seal the repair from inside and prime and paint the outside to ensure a longer life than the factory provided.

After grinding the patch panels, the fresh air vents are sealed off. The rain gutter is then etched, primered (all the way to the bottom of the cowl structure, and seam-sealed to ensure no water intrusion.
